The kiln of Jian Yao porcelain started in the Tang Dynasty, and it was very popular and prosperous during the Northern Song Dynasty and Southern Song Dynasty. Jian Yao porcelain is famous for black glazed tea cups, commonly known as Jian Zhan. Porcelain products such as Tuhao (means rabbit fur), Youdi (means oil-drop), Zheguban (means partridge spot), Yaobian (means shining changes under an unpredictable condition), were famous at home and abroad. The kiln of Jian Yao was one of the 8 biggest kilns during the Song Dynasty. The kiln site is located at Houjing Village, Shuiji Town, Jianyang District, Nanping City. Among them, the kiln of the rear door beside the road is the biggest one, which reaches at 135.6 meters long. It is the longest kiln in China at present, and is also the top of the world. The archaeological excavation of Jian Yao relic site (1989-1992) was awarded the 10 biggest archaeological discoveries of Fujian Province since the People’s Republic of China was founded in 1999. The site of Jian Yao kiln was the second batch of sites to be listed as provincial-level cultural relic protection sites issued by people’s government of Fujian Province in Oct, 1985. In June, 2001, the kiln of Jian Yao was the fifth batch of sites to be approved and listed in as key national cultural relic protection sites by the State Council.
