Former Office of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation

It is located at 57 Guxin Road, Kulangsu Island, and is now a major cultural heritage site protected at the national level. The bank took over this property from the British company, Elles &Co., and used it as the cottage for senior staff members of the bank. The building was built in 1876 with a building area of 370 square metres. It stands on a granite base with only one storey high. In plan, it is shaped like a trefoil, reflecting the interest in variety of shapes and forms during the Victoria era. The building occupies a distinguished site on the top of the cliff where the “Epigraphy on the Restoration of the Sanhe Taoist Temple” is carved, presenting an outstanding cultural landscape, reflecting the different perceptions of Chinese and foreigners in terms of human settlement.
