Shipaiyang(Banyang Stone Sail)

In Pingtan where there are thousands of reefs and hundreds of islets, the most unusual reef is Shipaiyang.  In 1994, it was named a “National Scenic Area”, and in 2001, it was included in the Tentative List of UNESCO World Heritage” as “Haitan Scenic Area”. The naturally formed sea stacks have no peers in the world. Shipaiyang is also called “Banyang Stone Sail”, for it is shaped  like two stone sails standing in the sea. The tall stone is as 33-meter high as a 10-floor building; the short one is as 17-meter high as a 6-floor building. This is the biggest spherically weathered granite marine stack in the world.

For thousands of years, Shipaiyang has been an altar for local fishermen and a symbol of Pingtan’s maritime culture. It has experienced countless typhoons over the past thousand years, but it still stands erect on the top of the East Sea. This is an incredible creation of nature, which has become the spiritual portrayal of Pingtan residents’ striving for survival and achieving great ambition in the teeth of the storm.
