Shifan Hakka music, also known as “Shiban” and “Wudui”, was named after playing ten musical instruments made of silk, bamboo, leather, wood and gold, etc. It is a kind of the Hakka folk instrumental music inherited by folk artists in past dynasties, whose titles mostly depict nature and the Hakkas’ customs and interests in the life. In addition, it has absorbed the tunes, aria and Quyi works from the operas of the past dynasties. There are no strict regulations on the number of musicians or musical instruments used in Shifan Hakka music. A band generally has as few as five to seven people and as many as ten to dozens of people. The main musical instruments of Shifan Hakka Music are Qudi, Luguan, Pipa, Sanxian, Erhu, Panghu, Jiaban and so on. The performance form is divided into sitting and marching, with the man holding the Jiaban as the conductor.
