From Song Dynasty till today, there are more than 400 sites of cliff inscriptions which can be found in various scenic spots. It reveals changes and development of Wuyi culture in the past dynasties. The content covers lyrical scenery painting, documentary tour, current affairs politics, expressing aspirations and title setting mystery. It can be roughly divided into Neo-Confucianism culture, religious culture, tea culture, landscape culture, government decrees, notices, workshop carvings, tablet inscriptions and revolutionary slogans inscriptions. The cliff inscriptions are extensive and carry profound connotations. They are often intertwined with the environment and scenery. One term has multiple meanings and different people hold varying viewpoints towards it. They can be said as both refined and vulgar. It’s a pity that they are partially weathered and eroded. It is an important material for probing into the historical and cultural development of Mount Wuyi. In October 1985, the People’s Government of Fujian Province announced it as among the second batch of cultural relics protection sites. It was incorporated to the World Cultural Heritage List in 1999.
